European NATO Leaders Back Denmark’s Sovereignty Over Greenland

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued the joint declaration. It emphasizes Arctic security, NATO’s role, and respect for sovereignty under international law, while noting the US as an essential partner through NATO and the Thule Air Base agreement. The statement responds to US rhetoric, including White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller’s claim that Greenland should join the United States, as Danish leaders warn such a move could fracture the alliance. Greenland Premier Jens Frederik Nielsen welcomed the support and called for dialogue based on international law.
